Christian Education
We believe that thinking is vital to faith and that exchange of ideas is important to Christian nurture. Central Presbyterian Church offers Sunday school for people of all ages, children to adults, at 9:45 a.m. each Sunday. Young children enjoy Bible lessons, while older youth engage in topical studies. The youth have studied, designed, and painted a mural in the style of a Byzantine chapel to decorate the entryway to the youth area of the church. Central Presbyterian Church also has lively adult classes. Topics vary widely, from Bible study to controversial subjects that confront our world and church. Recent topics classes have covered “Christian Life and the Arts”, “The Liquid Church: the Role of the Church in Today’s World”, and a study of the Gospel of Luke.
Music
Making a joyful noise to and for the Lord is a vital part of Central Presbyterian Church’s life, and we use music of all sorts in worship. Our Chancel Choir offers a wide range of music in worship, from traditional to contemporary. Hymns old and new are sung in worship by the congregation. Music might be accompanied by our wonderful pipe organ, by piano, or even by harpsichord in the sanctuary. Our handbell choir leads the musical part of worship several times a year. We also welcome special music to our worship several times each year: jazz, gospel, even a Caribbean steel band!
Fellowship
Sharing food and fellowship is an expression of our care for one another and a way to share our faith. Central Presbyterian Church’s small but active congregation offers a number of fellowship and study groups. Once a month we enjoy First Sunday Lunch (not surprisingly, usually on the first Sunday of each month), a chance to share a meal and support one of the programs of the church. The women of the church are active in Presbyterian Women, and junior and senior high youth have an active Youth Group. We also have a film-and-dinner group, “Central Cinema”, which meets over a light meal to view and discuss a movie once a month. Occasional “workdays” are wonderful opportunities for fellowship through common labor—a current project is building the labyrinth prayer path on our grounds.
